How To Identify Your Preferred Home Interior Design Style.

  1. Start by identifying the interior design styles you resonate with the most.  Research different styles of homes such as modern, contemporary, traditional, farmhouse, bohemian, etc.  This will give you a starting point to work from.

  2. Explore inspiration sources.  Look for inspiration in various places such as interior design magazines, books, online platforms (like Pinterest and Instagram), home decor websites, and even visiting model homes or showrooms.  Pay attention to the interior design styles that catch your eye and resonate with you.

  3. Create a home design inspiration board.  Collect images, colors, textures, and patterns that appeal to you and compile them into an inspiration board.  This visual representation will help you identify patterns and themes that consistently attract your attention.

  4. Reflect on your lifestyle.  Consider your lifestyle and how you want your home to function.  Do you prefer a more formal or casual atmosphere?  Are you drawn to open and airy spaces or cozy and intimate ones?  Think about the practical aspects of your lifestyle, such as the need for storage, child-friendly spaces, or entertaining areas.  These considerations will influence your interior design style choices.

  5. Consider your favorite colors.  Consider the colors you are naturally drawn to and those that make you feel comfortable and happy.  Do you prefer bold, vibrant hues, or are you more inclined toward soft, neutral tones?  Identifying your color preferences can help steer you toward a particular home design style.

  6. Assess your existing belongings.  Take stock of your current furniture, accessories, and artwork.  Identify the pieces that you genuinely love and have sentimental value.  This can give you clues about your preferred interior design style.  Look for common themes, materials, and design elements that resonate with you.

  7. Pay attention to your fashion choices. Your fashion style often reflects your taste in interior design. Consider the types of clothing, patterns, and colors you are drawn to when selecting your outfits. This can provide insights into your preferred interior design style.

  8. Consider your favorite environments. Think about the places where you feel most comfortable and inspired. It could be a coffee shop, a boutique hotel, a cozy cottage, or a modern art gallery. Analyze the elements of these spaces that you find appealing and try to incorporate those characteristics into your interior design style.

Hallmarking Your Interior Design Style.

Here I will describe different interior design and decorating styles.  You might find you don’t fall into just one category.

  1.  Modern: Modern interior design is characterized by clean lines, simplicity, and a minimalist approach.  It emphasizes open spaces, uncluttered layouts, and a focus on functionality.  Standard features include sleek furniture with smooth surfaces, a neutral color palette with occasional pops of bold color, and an emphasis on natural light.  Glass, metal, and concrete often create a sleek and sophisticated look.

  2. Contemporary: Contemporary design is often confused with modern design, but subtle differences exist.  While modern design refers to a specific period (roughly the mid-20th century), contemporary design represents the current design trends.  Contemporary interiors are characterized by a blend of different styles, fluid lines, and a more relaxed approach.  Neutral color palettes are standard, but bold colors and patterns may also be incorporated.  The focus is on creating a comfortable and inviting space with a mix of new and traditional elements.

  3. Traditional: Traditional design is rooted in classic and timeless aesthetics.  It draws inspiration from historical styles, such as European, Colonial, or Victorian.  Traditional interiors feature rich and warm color palettes, ornate detailing, and a sense of elegance.  Furniture is often formal and characterized by curved lines and intricate woodwork.  Fabrics like velvet, silk, and damask are commonly used.  The traditional design exudes a sense of familiarity, symmetry, and refinement.

  4. Farmhouse: Farmhouse design evokes a rustic and charming feel inspired by traditional farmhouses.  It combines elements of country, rustic, and vintage styles.  Farmhouse interiors often feature reclaimed wood, distressed finishes, and natural materials.  Neutral tones, such as whites, beiges, and grays, are prevalent, along with pops of rustic colors.  Cozy textiles, like burlap and linen, are used for upholstery and window treatments.  Farmhouse design emphasizes a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere with a mix of old and new pieces.

  5. Transitional: Transitional design blends elements of traditional and contemporary styles, creating a harmonious and timeless look.  It combines the warmth and familiarity of conventional methods with modern design's clean lines and simplicity.  Neutral color palettes with pops of color, a mix of textures, and a focus on comfort are standard in transitional interiors.  Furniture often features classic silhouettes with updated finishes, and accessories strike a balance between traditional and modern elements.

  6. Coastal: Coastal design, known as nautical or beach-inspired design, draws inspiration from seaside environments.  It aims to create a relaxed and breezy atmosphere reminiscent of coastal living.  Coastal interiors often incorporate light, airy colors like whites, blues, and soft pastels.  Natural materials such as wicker, rattan, and driftwood are common.  Nautical elements like stripes, seashells, and anchors may be accents.  Overall, the coastal design evokes a serene and coastal vibe.

  7. Boho: Boho, short for bohemian, is a style that embraces a free-spirited and unconventional approach.  It combines elements from various cultures, creating a vibrant and eclectic look.  Rich and bold colors, layered textiles, and abundant patterns and textures characterize Boho interiors.  Natural materials like rattan and macramé, as well as globally-inspired elements like Persian rugs and tribal prints, are often incorporated.  Boho design encourages a relaxed and artistic atmosphere with a sense of individuality.

  8. Eclectic: Eclectic design mixes and matches different styles and eras to create a unique and personal space.  It celebrates individuality and allows for a creative and diverse approach to design.  Eclectic interiors often feature a variety of colors, patterns, and textures.  Furniture pieces from different periods and styles can coexist harmoniously.  The key to successful eclectic design is finding balance and cohesion through color coordination, layering, and establishing a unifying element or theme.

How To Blend Your Interior Design Styles.

  1. Choose a unifying element.  Select a common element or theme that can tie the different styles together.  It could be a color palette, a specific material, or a particular design feature.  This unifying element will help create cohesion and balance in your space.

  2. Create a neutral backdrop.  Consider using a neutral color scheme for the walls, floors, and larger furniture pieces.  Neutral tones like whites, grays, and beiges provide a versatile base that can accommodate different design styles and allow other elements to stand out.

  3. Mix furniture and accessories.  Incorporate furniture and accessories from different design styles, but be mindful of scale, proportion, and functionality.  For instance, you can pair a modern sofa with a vintage coffee table or combine sleek contemporary chairs with a rustic dining table.

  4. Layer textures and patterns.  Experiment with different textures and patterns to add depth and visual interest to your space.  Mixing textures like smooth leather, rough wood, soft fabrics, and shiny metals can create a rich and eclectic atmosphere.  Similarly, combining patterns such as stripes, florals, geometric prints, or ethnic motifs can add visual excitement.

  5. Balance the visual weight.  Achieve balance by distributing visual weight evenly throughout the room.  If you have heavier, visually dominant pieces on one side, balance them with lighter or visually appealing elements on the other side.  This ensures that no single style overwhelms the space.

  6. Pay attention to lighting.  Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood and highlighting different design elements.  Choose lighting fixtures that complement your blended interior style and consider layering different types of lighting, such as ambient, task, and accent lighting, to create a warm and inviting ambiance.

  7. Edit and simplify.  Avoid overcrowding your space with too many elements.  Edit your design choices and keep the overall look cohesive and clutter-free.  Remember that less is often more, and negative space can enhance the impact of your design choices.

  8. Seek professional guidance.  If you're uncertain about blending different interior design styles, call me for a consultation.  I can provide expert advice, suggest creative solutions, and help you achieve the desired balance between different aesthetics.
