How To Organize and Declutter Your Kitchen

Kitchen Organization Tips

One of my favorite rooms in a house is the kitchen, and the only thing that can change that is a cluttered and unorganized one. So, I’m excited to share this post with practical and easy-to-follow tips for decluttering and organizing your kitchen so you can create a space you love.

Have A Vision And A Plan.

Before you can begin to declutter and organize your kitchen, you need to have a vision and know your goals for the function of your kitchen. Think of your style and what inspires you.  Do you want your kitchen to revolve only around cooking? Do you want it to be inviting and welcoming? Or do you just want it to be less stressful?  Having a clear vision of what you want the outcome to be will keep you motivated and focused on getting it done.

Don’t attempt to tackle the entire kitchen at one time.  Instead, break it down into smaller projects.

  1.  Start with the silverware and utensil drawers.  Use dividers and drawer organizers to separate your silverware.  Only keep matching silverware.  Get rid of duplicate spatulas and serving spoons if you don’t use them.

  2. Then, move on to the countertop and cabinets and finish with the pantry.  This will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed, and you will be able to see the progress you are making.

  3. Clean as you go. Take everything out of the drawers and cabinets and wipe them down. Fix any damaged areas and replace anything that is broken.

  4. Put duplicate utensils, plates, and cookware in a box to donate. Donate excess coffee mugs or glasses that are never used. How many water bottles do you really need?

  5. Have a throw-away container for broken items or small appliances that no longer work.  Get rid of containers without lids and anything related to takeout (menus, containers, plastic forks, condiment packages, etc).

  6. Also, don’t forget to check the expiration date on items in your pantry and fridge.  One way I make sure I use what I have is to plan my meals out for the week.  Look at the food you have and put some meals together.  Not only will this ensure you are using what you already have, but it will save you money by not going to the grocery store as often.

Maximize Your Storage Space.

Find a place for everything you want to keep.

  1.  Use containers, bins, baskets, and jars to keep things neat and easily accessible.

  2. Put the things you don’t use daily in the back of the cabinets so it is easy to get to what you do need.

  3. Have a storage area or cabinet for holiday dishes and baking pans so they don’t take up space for everyday items.

  4. Keep a donation box in your garage and toss things into it when you realize you don’t need it.  There’s no reason to put it back in a drawer if it never gets used.

  5. Have bins under your sink for cleaning supplies used daily.

  6. Get some hooks and hang your broom and mop on the back of a door.

  7. Add shelves to the end of your cabinets or the sides of an island for extra storage space.

  8. Hang under cabinet racks for mugs or wine glasses.

  9. Add shelf risers to create double shelving.

  10. This lid organizer was a game-changer for me.  Now my plastic ware is neat and tidy.
